The Refrigerant Change: What R-454B Means If You're Buying an AC Now

If you're shopping for a new air conditioner, you'll notice something on the spec sheet that wasn't there a few years ago: a refrigerant called R-454B instead of the familiar R-410A. This is a genuine industry-wide change, not a brand's marketing angle, and it's worth two minutes of your attention because it affects both what you buy and how you think about the system you already own. The good news up front: if your current AC works, this changes nothing about it today.

What actually changed

The transition came from the AIM Act, signed in December 2020, which directed the EPA to phase down production of hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants, and the EPA's Technology Transitions rule set the requirement that new residential AC and heat pump equipment manufactured after January 1, 2025 must use refrigerants with a GWP of 700 or lower.

GWP means global warming potential, a measure of how much a refrigerant contributes to warming if it escapes. R-410A has a GWP around 2,088, while the replacements R-454B (GWP 466) and R-32 (GWP 675) fall under the threshold. Most U.S. manufacturers chose R-454B for residential split systems.

So when you buy a new system in Oklahoma today, it will almost certainly be an R-454B unit. That's not an upsell, it's simply what manufacturers now build.

What this means if you already own an AC

This is the part that causes unnecessary worry, so let's be clear about it.

R-410A systems already installed are not illegal, and you can keep using yours. The phase-down restricts manufacturing of new equipment with R-410A, not use of existing systems. Your AC will keep running, and it can still be serviced and recharged.

What does change over time is cost. As supply decreases, the price of R-410A is likely to increase, and repairs involving refrigerant may become more expensive. That doesn't mean replacing a healthy system. It means two practical things:

  • Fix leaks promptly rather than living with an annual "top-off." Paying for increasingly expensive refrigerant every summer is a bad deal that gets worse.
  • Factor it into repair-or-replace decisions on an aging unit. A major refrigerant-related repair on an old R-410A system is a stronger replacement signal than it was a few years ago. If your system is old enough to still use R-22, that's even more true.

Is R-454B safe? The A2L question

You may see R-454B described as "mildly flammable," which sounds alarming until you understand the classification. R-454B and R-32 are A2L classified, meaning mildly flammable in concentrated form, which has implications for installation, not for normal operation. They were extensively tested and code-approved for residential use with built-in safeguards, and they're far less flammable than fuels like propane.

In practice, this is a technician concern rather than a homeowner one. New equipment is engineered around it, with added safety features, and handling refrigerant was never a DIY job anyway. What it does mean is that your installer should be properly trained and equipped for A2L systems, which is a fair question to ask.

What to ask when you're buying

  • Which refrigerant does this system use? New equipment should be R-454B (or R-32). Straightforward question, straightforward answer.
  • Is your team trained and equipped for A2L refrigerants? A reasonable thing to confirm.
  • If you're offered a discounted R-410A unit, understand the trade-off. R-410A equipment manufactured before January 1, 2025 may still be sold and installed while supplies last, where local codes allow. It isn't wrong to buy one, but you're buying into a refrigerant whose service cost is expected to climb over the system's life. For a unit you plan to keep 15 years in Oklahoma's climate, that matters.
  • How does this affect the warranty and parts support? Worth knowing for any new system.

One thing you cannot do

You can't put R-454B into an R-410A system. They aren't interchangeable, and the equipment is designed around a specific refrigerant. Anyone suggesting a "conversion" as a cheap workaround is not giving you good advice. When your system reaches the end of its life, the new one will simply come with the new refrigerant.
