Why Won't My AC Turn On?
Before you check anything, answer one question, because it splits this problem into two very different diagnoses: is absolutely nothing happening, or is something running but no cold air arriving?
- Nothing at all, no fan, no hum, no thermostat display, points toward power, the thermostat, or a safety switch.
- The indoor fan runs but the air is not cold, or the outdoor unit sits silent while the indoor one works, points toward the outdoor unit, a capacitor, or refrigerant.
Homeowners often skip this step and start troubleshooting the wrong half of the system. Sort it first, then work the right list.
If nothing happens at all
Work through these in order:
- 1The thermostat. Is the display blank? Replace the batteries. Is it set to Cool, with the target temperature below the current room temperature? A thermostat bumped to Off or Heat is a genuinely common cause.
- 2The breaker. Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker labeled AC, HVAC, air handler, or condenser. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop. A breaker that will not hold is protecting you from a fault, and repeatedly forcing it is dangerous.
- 3The indoor power switch. Most air handlers and furnaces have a switch nearby that looks exactly like a light switch. They get flipped by accident more often than you would think, especially in garages and attics.
- 4The outdoor disconnect. Near the outdoor unit is a small box with a pull-out or switch. Lawn crews, kids, and previous service visits all account for these being left off.
- 5The access panel. If a panel on the indoor unit is not fully seated, a safety switch prevents the system from running.
- 6The condensate drain. Many systems include a float switch that shuts everything down when the drain pan fills. In humid Oklahoma summers this is a frequent, and easily missed, cause. If the pan is full or the drain line is clogged, the system will refuse to start on purpose.
If the fan runs but there's no cold air
Different list entirely:
- Check the outdoor unit. Is it running? If the indoor fan works but the outdoor unit is silent, suspect the capacitor, contactor, or the disconnect being off.
- Listen for a hum with no spin. A humming outdoor unit whose fan will not turn is a classic failed capacitor, one of the most common summer failures.
- Look for ice on the refrigerant lines or coil. If present, the system needs to thaw before anything else, and you are likely dealing with airflow or refrigerant.
- Check the filter. Severe restriction can trigger safety shutdowns and freeze the coil.
- Weak, lukewarm air with long run times often means low refrigerant, which means a leak.
Why this happens most on the hottest days
It is not bad luck. Extreme heat is when the system draws the most current and works the hardest, so components that were already marginal, a weakening capacitor, a corroded contactor, a slow refrigerant leak, finally give out under peak load. That is also why a spring tune-up prevents so many July no-cool calls: those parts show measurable warning signs months before they strand you.
When to stop and call
Call a professional if the breaker trips again after one reset, if you smell burning or see scorching at the panel or unit, if the outdoor unit hums without spinning, if the system shuts off repeatedly soon after starting, or if you have gone through the checks above with no result. Capacitors in particular hold an electrical charge even with the power off and are not a DIY part, despite what a video might suggest.
